If you’re a Disney fan and a crafter, you probably already know how fun it is to make your favorite characters take shape out of a few basic supplies.
Maybe you love creating your favorite Disney Princess, or perhaps you have a soft spot for one of the Seven Dwarfs.
Regardless, my favorite thing about crafting has been the ability to make something out of nothing. You start with a pile of string or beads or whatever the project calls for, and end up with a lovable character you can give as a gift or keep for yourself.
That’s the fun behind our list of Disney diamond painting kits, Disney Cricut projects, Disney craft kits, Disney Perler bead patterns, ideas for a Disney decorated Christmas tree (because you can never have too much Disney!), and the reason we’re bringing you a list of super cute Disney amigurumi patterns to satisfy your creative side!
What is Amigurumi?
If you aren’t familiar with amigurumi, it’s a form of handcraft that involves crocheting stuffed dolls.
The word amigurumi is a combination of two Japanese words, “ami,” which means crocheted or knitted, and “nuigurumi,” which means means stuffed doll.
The finished product is a plush character, much like a stuffed animal.
Most amigurumi patterns are for crochet, but some are available with instructions for knitting.
Amigurumi is a form of crochet that both beginners and experienced crafters can participate in, using basic techniques including the single stitch, double stitch, and invisible decrease.
Supplies Needed for Amigurumi
Before you get started with your amigurumi project, these are some supplies you’ll want to have on hand.
Yarn
When selecting a yarn for amigurumi, you’ll want to consider how fluffy or tightly spun it is. This is because fluffy yarns can be difficult to work with and the fibers can overshadow the details of your doll.
Popular options include:
- A tightly spun yarn that ensures you don’t see fibers. 100% cotton yarn or mercerized cotton yarn are good choices.
- A lightweight, machine-washable yarn, such as a semi-cotton blend of 50% cotton and 50% acrylic.
- A budget-friendly acrylic yarn. Be aware that this type tends to be more fibrous and can pull out of shape if the stitches aren’t tight enough, but it can be ideal for the cost-conscious.
Additional Materials
Beyond the yarn, you’ll need a few more materials:
- Small gauge crochet hook – Check your pattern for the exact size needed. This set of crochet hooks has several options, as small gauge hooks are needed to prevent the stuffing from showing through on your doll.
- Stuffing – You’ll need some polyester or cotton stuffing to round out your creation! Polyfil is a popular and widely-available option.
- Materials for posing – Some dolls may be posable. If so, you can use some floral wire or pipe cleaners to help them take shape.
- Weights – In order to keep your doll upright, you can weigh down the bottom of the figure by adding pebbles to the lower sections.
