Disney’s claim to fame may have started with a mouse, but most people don’t realize that it all actually began with a cat named Julius!

In fact, fans everywhere adore the Disney Cats–each with its own unique and endearing feline personality.

Unforgettable Disney Cats

1. Julius from The Alice Comedies

Before Mickey Mouse was on the map, Julius was created in 1922.

He was known as a bold hero and quickly became the focus of the Alice Comedies.

2. Big Bad Pete

Big Bad Pete, AKA Peg Leg Pete, an unknown Disney cat

Originally created as a bear for Alice Solves the Puzzle in 1925, Big Bad Pete (AKA Pegleg Pete) was later defined as a cat when Mickey Mouse was created in 1928.

Pete has been cast in many roles over the years, though most of them are villainous characterizations.

3. Figaro from Pinocchio

Figaro was the first cat to appear in a full-length animated film in the 1940s. Notably, Figaro is also Minnie’s cat.

4. Gideon from Pinocchio

Gideon, Honest John's sidekick from Disney's Pinocchio

Also from Pinocchio, Gideon hangs out with the clever fox, Honest John. He often makes his partner mad.

5. Lucifer from Cinderella

Lucifer appeared in 1950 as the cat belonging to Cinderella’s stepmother, Lady Tremaine, in one of our favorite Disney Princess movies.

Unlike Cinderella’s mice and bird friends, Lucifer is the only animal in the movie who isn’t on Cinderella’s side.

6, 7, 8, 9, and 10. Toulouse, Marie, Berlioz, Duchess, and O’Malley from The Aristocats

Duchess is the well-off mother of three adorable kittens Toulouse, Marie, and Berlioz.

Thomas O’Malley is the alley cat they befriend in the film.

These cats are famous for their song, “Everybody Wants to Be a Cat.”

11. Tigger from Winnie the Pooh

He may be often overlooked as a Disney Cat, but “the wonderful thing about tiggers” is that Winnie the Pooh’s friend Tigger is indeed a bouncy tiger filled with joy.

12. Dinah from Alice in Wonderland

Appearing in 1951, Dinah is Alice’s pet cat, with orange fur and a playful personality.

13. Cheshire Cat from Alice in Wonderland

The Cheshire Cat, which appears in Wonderland, is known for its mischievous, big grin.

14. Oliver from Oliver and Company

Oliver, the kitty from New York City in Oliver and Company

Oliver first appeared in the 1988 film as a shy cat in New York City, who befriends a dog named Dodger.

15. Bagheera from The Jungle Book

Bagheera, the black panther from Jungle Book

Bagheera is the wise black panther in The Jungle Book who befriends and protects Mowgli.

16. Shere Kahn from The Jungle Book

Shere Khan, the tiger from Jungle Book

Shere Kahn is the villainous tiger in the 1967 movie.

17. Sargeant Tibbs from 101 Dalmations

Sgt. Tibbs, the cat from 101 Dalmations

Pongo and Perdita’s friend, Sgt. Tibbs, is a brave cat who helps to search for the missing puppies.

18. Mittens from Bolt

Mittens, the black cat from the movie Bolt

A more recent addition in 2008, Mittens is a family cat turned street cat in New York City who meets up with Bolt.

19 and 20. Si and Am from Lady and the Tramp

Si and Am are two cats belonging to Aunt Sarah from The Lady and the Tramp

Known as the mischievous cats of Aunt Sarah, Si and Am set out to cause trouble for Lady in this 1955 film.

21. Rufus from The Rescuers

Rufus from The Rescuers

This gruff orphanage cat becomes friends with a girl named Penny.

In an unusual characterization of a cat, Rufus also befriends two mice, Bernard and Bianca.

22. Rajah from Aladdin

No list of Disney Cats would be complete without Jasmine’s pet tiger and protector, Rajah, from the 1992 movie Aladdin.

23. Sassy from Homeward Bound

Sassy the Himalayan cat, along with Chance and Shadow the dogs

This 1993 film featured three pets, including Sassy the Himalayan cat, who set out on a perilous journey to return home to their owners.

24. Simba from The Lion King

Simba, Nala, Rafiki, Scar, Timon, Pumbaa, and Zasu on Pride Rock

The little lion cub who just can’t wait to be king is deceived by his uncle, forcing him to leave Pride Rock.

He meets his new friends Timon and Pumbaa before later returning to defeat Scar.

25. Nala from The Lion King

Nala is Simba’s childhood friend who later convinces him to return to save the Pride Lands.

26. Mufasa from The Lion King

Mufasa is the wise king of the Pride Lands, who is killed by Scar while trying to save Simba from a stampede.

He continues to guide Simba through visions in the sky.

27. Sarabi from The Lion King

Sarabi is the lioness mother of Simba in The Lion King who stands up to Scar after Mufasa’s death.

28. Scar from The Lion King

The evil uncle of Simba, Scar will stop at nothing to try to attain power as the King.

Simba ultimately defeats him and reclaims his place as the rightful King.

29. Sabor from Tarzan

Sabor from Tarzan

Sabor is the leopard who killed Tarzan’s parents in the 1999 film.

30. Mayor Leodore Lionheart from Zootopia

Mayor Lionheart from Zootopia

Mayor Lionheart is featured in the more recent animated film, Zootopia.

31. Clawhauser from Zootopia

Clawhauser, the cheetah from Zootopia

Also in the 2016 film, Clawhauser is the donut-loving cheetah who works the front desk of the police station.

32 and 33. King Richard and Prince John from Robinhood

King Richard and Prince John may be brothers, but they are vastly different from one another.

While King Richard is the noble and kind king of England, Prince John is his cowardly and cruel brother who rules while King Richard is away.

34. Felicia from The Great Mouse Detective

Appearing in 1986, Felicia is the overweight, spoiled cat who wants to catch the mice in the movie.

She belongs to Professor Ratigan.

35. Machiavelli from Luca

Machiavelli, the cat from Pixar-Disney movie Luca

The newest cat on our list, Machiavelli is the cat belonging to Giulia and Massimo in the 2021 Pixar movie, Luca.

He is suspicious of Luca and Alberto and the secret they are keeping.

36. DC from That Darn Cat

DC, That Darn Cat, with Patti Randall

DC is the mischievous cat who stars alongside Patti Randall in the 1965 live action movie, That Darn Cat.

He is involved in the solving of a bank robbery and kidnapping mystery.

37. Jake from The Cat From Outer Space

Jake, the cat from outer space

Jake is an alien whose flying saucer crashes on earth in this 1978 live action film.

38. Thomasina from The Three Lives of Thomasina

In this 1963 film, Thomasina is a seriously injured cat who needs the healing power of love to survive.

39. Aslan from The Chronicles of Narnia Series

Aslan, the lion from the Chronicles of Narnia series

In this series of films based on the books by C.S. Lewis, Aslan is the great lion hero.
