Perler beads, (also known as melty beads, fusion beads, and hama beads), are small, tube-shaped beads. When ironed, they melt, or fuse, together.

One of the most common brands of fusion beads is Perler, which is why you’ll often hear these beads referred to as Perler beads.

Perler Bead Basics

Before we look at some fun Disney Perler bead patterns, I’ll give you a quick overview of Perler bead basics, just in case you’re new to this fun craft.

Using Pegboards with Perler Beads

Beads are arranged into patterns or designs using a plastic pegboard. This will be your work surface, and it helps to hold the tubular beads in place while you work.

The pegboard also serves as a grid, allowing you to keep track of where beads are being placed.

Pegboards come in many shapes and sizes. They also come in squares, which can be attached to each other to enlarge your work surface for larger projects.

Once your design is finished, you’ll use an iron to heat the beads, allowing them to fuse together into the finished product, which is removed from the pegboard.

How to Iron Perler Beads

To iron Perler Beads, you’ll need some parchment paper, an iron, and a heat-safe surface.

Many Perler bead kits come with a piece of parchment, which you can reuse over and over again. If yours didn’t come with any, simply use a sheet of kitchen parchment.

  • You’ll start by using a medium heat setting on your iron. Make sure there isn’t any water in it, because you don’t need to steam the paper.
  • Place the parchment over your finished design.
  • Set the iron on the parchment paper and gently move it in a circular motion, until all of the beads have melted and fused together.
  • Gently remove your design from the pegboard and turn it over. Repeat the process by ironing over parchment paper on the other side, until the beads are fused.

Recommended Materials

There are a few items that will help you as you get started with your Disney Perler patterns.

Of course, you’ll need Perler beads. You can buy large containers of multiple colors, and you can also buy small packs of additional colors as needed.

You’ll also need pegboards. These are the beads and boards we have in our home.

And if you don’t already have them at home, you’ll also need an iron and parchment paper for fusing your beads together once your creation is finished.

How to Read a Perler Bead Pattern

Before you get started with your Disney Perler bead patterns, it’s important to know how to read and use a pattern.

Perler bead patterns are set up like a grid, where each square in the grid represents one bead. This is the same way the pegboard is set up.

Patterns will typically tell you how many columns and rows will be used in the pattern (this helps you know if the design will fit on your peg board), as well as how many beads you’ll need of each color used in the design.

Personally, I think it’s easiest to start on the top or bottom row and work your way across, counting and placing beads on your peg board in the same order as shown on the pattern.

You could also start on one side and work in columns.

The important thing is, you’ll want to be methodical. Don’t try to skip around to different parts of the design.

If the patterns print “to scale,” a clear peg board can often be placed over the pattern, so you can see it under the peg board as you work.

The complexity of patterns varies. Some will require more beads than others, as well as include more intricate designs. Others will be simpler and easier to complete for beginners.
