Do you have a favorite Disney Princess? Most Disney fans do–often because our first exposure to these leading ladies was through one of the wildly popular animated feature films in which they star.

While each of the Disney Princesses has her own distinct personality, they each boast positive characteristics that give them such a wide appeal.

The story lines and music make the characters even more endearing, then they live on in Disney merchandise, so our own children can fall in love with the characters we adore.

We have a separate list of Disney Princesses, so today we want to take a look at the full list of Disney Princess movies that made them famous.

Complete List of Disney PRincess Movies in Order

Here is the complete list of the official Disney movies that featured the Disney princesses, in the order in which they were released:

  1. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (premiered December 1937, widely released February 1938)
  2. Cinderella (1950)
  3. Sleeping Beauty (1959)
  4. The Little Mermaid (1989)
  5. Beauty and the Beast (1991)
  6. Aladdin (1992)
  7. Pocahontas (1995)
  8. Mulan (1998)
  9. The Princess and the Frog (2009)
  10. Tangled (2011)
  11. Brave (2012)
  12. Moana (2016)

To be considered a Disney Princess, the character should:

  • Be royalty or marry royalty.
  • Have an animal friend or the ability to communicate with animals.
  • Sing at least one song in the movie.
  • Be a part of a widely successful movie.

There is some speculation among Disney fans that Raya (from Raya and the Last Dragon) may eventually become the 13th official Disney Princess. However, she didn’t sing in the movie!

And although they aren’t officially part of the Disney Princess franchise, we also consider Queen Elsa and her sister Anna from Frozen to be among fan favorites, despite the fact that they don’t have an animal companion!

Names of the Disney Princess Movies

We’re going to take a closer look at each movie, including some interesting tidbits and Disney Princess trivia, so you can learn more about these beloved characters.

Maybe you know about the characters but haven’t actually seen the movie they’re in–which is an even better reason to read about these fun Disney Princess films!

Now, on to the official list of Disney Princess movies!

1. Snow White

Premier Year: 1937

Movie Run Time: 1 hour 23 minutes

Princess and Notable Characters: Snow White, the Seven Dwarfs, the Evil Queen (Snow White’s stepmother), Prince Charming

Movie Storyline: Snow White, who is known for her kindness and sweet voice, is named “the fairest one of all” by the Evil Queen’s Magic Mirror.

Driven by jealousy, the queen sets out to have Snow White killed by a huntsman. The huntsman warns Snow White, allowing her to escape into the woods, where she meets the seven dwarfs.

When the queen realizes Snow White is still alive, she disguises herself as an old woman and tricks Snow White into eating a poisoned apple, which sends her into a deep sleep.

The charming prince awakens her from her slumber with true love’s kiss.

Trivia or Related Movies:

  • This Disney movie is based on the German fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm, Snow White was the very first Disney princess!
  • This movie was the first full-length animated film by the Walt Disney Company, making it a beloved favorite of multiple generations.
  • In 1987, Snow White was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

2. Cinderella

Premier Year: 1957

Movie Run Time: 1 hour 53 minutes

Princess and Notable Characters: Cinderella, her mice friends (including Gus and Jaq), her dog Bruno, stepmother Lady Tremaine, stepsisters Anastasia and Drizella, evil cat Lucifer (a notable Disney cat), the Prince (sometimes referred to as Prince Charming), and Fairy Godmother.

Movie Storyline:

Cinderella lives with her stepmother and stepsisters, who treat her terribly, forcing her to work as a servant in her own home.

When the prince hosts a ball as an event where he will choose a wife, Cinderella is forbidden to attend.

Cinderella’s Fairy Godmother comes to the rescue, using her fairy magic to outfit Cinderella in a beautiful ball gown and the iconic glass slippers.

However, the magic expires at midnight, so Cinderella must return home before then.

Cinderella and the prince have such a wonderful time at the ball that she loses track of time. She hurries back home as the clock strikes midnight, leaving one of her glass slippers behind.

The Prince searches all over the kingdom for the girl who stole his heart, using the glass slipper to find his beloved princess!

Trivia or Related Movies:

  • Long before it was a movie, Disney had plans to produce a Silly Symphony based on the story of Cinderella.
  • Additional movies include the animated Cinderella 2: Dreams Come True and Cinderella 3: A Twist in Time, as well as Disney’s 2015 live-action movie Cinderella.

3. Sleeping Beauty

Premier Year: 1959

Movie Run Time: 1 hour 15 minutes

Princess and Notable Characters: Princess Aurora (also known as Briar Rose), Prince Phillip, three good fairies (Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather), the evil witch Maleficent, and Aurora’s parents, King Stefan and Queen Leah.

Movie Storyline:

As a child, Aurora was cursed by the evil fairy Maleficent. To keep her safe, her father, the king, sent her to live int he woods, where the good fairies Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather would raise her.

While living in the woods, she meets Prince Phillip

When Aurora returns to the castle for her sixteenth birthday, Maleficent causes her to prick her finger and descend into a deep sleep.

Prince Phillip is the only one who can save her!

Trivia or Related Movies:

  • Aurora speaks only eighteen lines throughout Sleeping Beauty. The only lead Disney character who speaks less than her is Dumbo.
  • Related movies include the 2007 Direct to Video film Disney Princess Enchanted Tales: Follow Your Dreams, the 2014 feature film Maleficent, and the 2019 film Maleficent: Mistress of Evil.

4. The Little Mermaid

Premier Year: 1989 (Yes, if you’re keeping track, there was a 30 year gap between princess movies! This started the run of successful films at the box office known as the Disney Renaissance).

Movie Run Time: 1 hour 23 minutes

Princess and Notable Characters: Princess Ariel, her father King Triton, Prince Eric (Ariel’s love interest), the sea witch Ursula, and Flounder, Sebastian, and Scuttle.

Movie Storyline:

As the youngest mermaid in her family, Ariel is captivated by the human world. Against her father’s wishes, the young girl often explores the surface of the water, as well as old shipwrecks.

She ends up falling in love with a human, Prince Eric.

After trading her voice for a pair of legs in a risky deal with Ursula, Ariel has three days to win the heart of Prince Eric.

Eric ends up falling in love with Ariel, and the two are married with the blessing of King Triton. They live on land with their dog, Max.

Trivia or Related Movies:

  • The color of Ariel’s mermaid tail was a special mix concocted by the Disney paint lab.
  • The pose of Ariel sitting on a rock watching Eric was inspired by a famous statue in Copenhagen, Denmark, known as “The Little Mermaid.”
  • The movie is based on a Hans Christian Andersen story.
  • In an early draft of the movie, Ariel had a dolphin friend named Breaker. He was later replaced by Flounder.
  • Despite being part octopus, Ursula only has six tentacles.
  • Related movies include the Direct to Video films The Little Mermaid 2: Return to the Sea and The Little Mermaid: Ariel’s Beginning. There was also The Little Mermaid animated series, which ran from 1992 to 1994, and the more recent special production of The Little Mermaid Live! in 2019.

5. Beauty and the Beast

Premier Year: 1991

Movie Run Time: 1 hour 24 minutes

Princess and Notable Characters: Princess Belle, her eccentric father Maurice, Gaston and his sidekick LeFou, and the castle servants Lumiere, Cogsworth, Mrs. Potts, Chip, and the Featherduster.

Movie Storyline:

Based on a french fairy tale, an enchantress in disguise visits a young prince, who treats her poorly. The enchantress turns the selfish prince into a beast and his castle servants into objects.

However, if the prince learns to love and be loved in return, the spell will be broken.

Belle accidentally ends up in the castle, where she and the Beast begin to realize there’s “something there that wasn’t there before.”

They begin to fall in love, and the spell is eventually broken, restoring the beast into a prince, as well as his servants into their human form.

Trivia or Related Movies:

  • Belle is the only one in her village who wears blue–this was intentional, to show how out of place she was.
  • In French, Belle’s name means “beautiful.”
  • Related movies include the Direct to Video films Beauty and the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas, and Beauty and the Beast: Belle’s Magical World. There’s also the 2017 live-action remake Beauty and the Beast.

6. Aladdin

Premier Year: 1992

Movie Run Time: 1 hour 30 minutes

Princess and Notable Characters: Princess Jasmine and her pet tiger Rajah, Aladdin and his pet monkey Abu, the evil adviser Jafar and his bird Iago, and the Genie.

Movie Storyline:

Aladdin lives on the streets, but meets Princess Jasmine in the market one day when she is out and about.

Aladdin believes the daughter of the sultan will never love a “street rat” like himself, so when he discovers the Genie, he wishes to become a prince.

Jafar, an advisor to the sultan, tries to steal the lamp so he can misuse Genie for his own selfish purposes.

Aladdin’s true identity is revealed, and he and Jasmine must work together with the Genie to defeat Jafar.

In his quest to become all-powerful, Jafar is tricked into sentencing himself to a life inside his own lamp.

Trivia or Related Movies:

  • Princess Jasmine learned to ride a horse before she learned to walk.
  • Related movies include the Direct to Video sequel The Return of Jafar, Aladdin and the King of Thieves, and Disney Princess Enchanted Tales: Follow Your Dreams. There’s also the 2019 live-action film Aladdin, as well as an Aladdin animated series that ran from 1994 to 1995.

7. Pocahontas

Premier Year: 1995

Movie Run Time: 1 hour 21 minutes

Princess and Notable Characters: Pocahontas and her father, Chief Powhatan, Captain John Smith, the warrior Kocoum, Governor Ratcliffe, and Grandmother Willow, Meeko, and Flit.

Movie Storyline:

Against her wishes, Pocahontas has been arranged to marry Kocoum. She meets the European settler, Captain John Smith, and finds herself falling in love with him as she teaches him about the importance of living in harmony with nature.

As their love story unfolds, the settlers and the Powhatan people are on the verge of war.

Pocahontas selflessly throws herself in front of Captain John Smith to prevent him from being killed, helping to move both sides toward peace.

Trivia or Related Movies:

  • Pocahontas is the only Disney Princess to be based on a real person.
  • It is believed that the movie was released on the 400th anniversary of Pocahontas’ birth.
  • Related movies include the Direct to Video film Pocahontas 2: Journey to a New World.

8. Mulan

Premier Year: 1998

Movie Run Time: 1 hour 28 minutes

Princess and Notable Characters: Mulan and her dragon friend, Mushu, the dragon’s sidekick, Cri-Kee, the Chinese military commander Li Shang, and the Hun army commander Shan Yu.

Movie Storyline:

As an only child, the brave and independent Mulan disguises herself as a male to join the miliary in place of her weak and aging father.

A dragon, Mushu, is supposed to dissuade her from her plan. However, he realizes he cannot change her mind, so he instead helps her.

Mulan trains as a warrior and ends up saving her people from the attacks of the Hun Army.

Trivia or Related Movies:

  • Mulan is actually not a princess in the movie, since her parents are not royalty and she does not become royalty.
  • In Mandarin, Mulan’s name means “magnolia.”
  • Related movies include the 2004 Direct to Video film Mulan 2, as well as the 2020 live-action film Mulan.

9. The Princess and the Frog

Premier Year: 2009

Movie Run Time: 1 hour 37 minutes

Princess and Notable Characters: Tiana and her parents, James and Eudora, as well as Prince Naveen, Dr. Facilier, Charlotte La Bouff, Mama Odie, and Louis.

Movie Storyline:

Tiana, the main character of the film, dreams of opening her own restaurant in New Orleans.

When she meets Prince Naveen, who has been turned into a frog, he kisses Tiana in hopes of breaking the spell. However, his plan backfires and Tiana is also turned into a frog!

The two frogs journey together through the Bayou in search of Mama Odie, who they believe can help break the spell.

Trivia or Related Movies:

  • Tiana was the first African American Disney Princess.
  • Tiana is also the only Disney Princess with a job. She runs Tiana’s Palace, which is her own restaurant.
  • The movie is loosely based on a fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm.
  • Related movies or series include Tiana, which is a television series planned for 2022.

10. Tangled

Premier Year: 2009

Movie Run Time: 1 hour 37 minutes

Princess and Notable Characters: Rapunzel and her lizard Pasqual, Mother Gothel, Flynn Rider, Maximus, the Stabbington Brothers.

Movie Storyline:

Rapunzel, whose hair has magical powers, was kidnapped at birth by Mother Gothel, who uses Rapunzel’s powers to preserve her own youthfulness.

She keeps Rapunzel locked up in a tower, teaching her to fear the outside world so she won’t try to escape.

Rapunzel’s one dream was to see the lights that floated into the air on her birthday. Thanks to a chance encounter with Flynn Rider, she ventures out to do just that–before Mother Gothel finds her!

  • Rapunzel’s hair is 70 feet long.
  • Hazelnut soup is Rapunzel’s favorite food!
  • The movie is loosely based on a fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm.
  • Related movies include the animated short film Tangled Ever After, the Direct to Television film Tangled: Before Ever After, and the animated series Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure, which ran from 2017 to 2020.

11. Brave

Premier Year: 2012

Movie Run Time: 1 hour 33 minutes

Princess and Notable Characters: Princess Merida and her horse, Angus, her parents, King Fergus and Queen Elinor, her brothers, Princes Hubert, Harris, and Hamish, a monstrous bear known as Mor’du, and The Witch.

Movie Storyline:

Merida is a feisty young Scottish princess who refuses to comply with tradition and be married based only on royal custom, which strains her relationship with her mother, the queen.

As an excellent archer, she attempts to win her own hand in marriage, causing a heated argument with her mother.

When Merida meets The Witch, she casts a spell that turns Queen Elinor into a bear. Merida must try to repair her family before it’s too late!

  • Merida is the first princess from a Pixar film.
  • If Merida’s hair were straightened, it would extend past her knees.
  • Merida wears 22 different outfits and five different hairstyles in the movie.

12. Moana

Premier Year: 2016

Movie Run Time: 1 hour 47 minutes

Princess and Notable Characters: Moana and her pig, Put, her rooster Hei Hei, Chief Tui, Gramma Tala, and Maui.

Movie Storyline:

Moana is a brave princess with an intense curiosity for the water.

Despite her father’s warnings, she sets sail in an effort to save her people and the dying island of Motonui.

Along the way, she meets the selfish demigod, Maui, who has stolen the Heart of Te Fiti.

Moana and Maui embark on a treacherous journey to return the Heart of Te Fiti in order to restore the natural balance and save Motonui.

Trivia or Related Movies:

  • The story of Moana takes place 3000 years ago in the islands of Polynesia.
  • In many Polynesian languages, Moana’s name means “ocean.”
