Planning a Mickey Mouse birthday party can be so fun–there are countless themed options for decor and food.

One of my favorite “cake” options isn’t really a cake at all–it’s cake balls!

These Mickey Mouse cake pops are too cute, aren’t they?

These are a fun way to bring your party theme to life as a delicious handheld dessert or party favor. It’s the next best thing to being at Walt Disney World!

One of the best things about these cake pops is that they are perfect for little hands! There’s no need to mess with forks or utensils–everyone can grab a cake pop and enjoy a sweet treat the easy way.

Not only that, but these fun Disney treats are also really easy to customize.

You can use any cake flavor you like–red velvet, chocolate, vanilla, confetti cake, or whatever strikes your fancy! The cake itself will be covered with candy coating, so a different flavor won’t affect the appearance.

And it’s totally fine to use a cake mix to prepare your cake–such a great way to save time.

You’ll use tinted white chocolate and milk chocolate almond bark to help hold everything together on the lollipop stick.

And really, if you wanted to, you could turn these Mickey cake pops into Minnie Mouse cake pops by simply changing up the colors of the melted chocolate and adding candy bows between the ears.

Or maybe you are hosting a Christmas party during the holiday season, in which case you could make them green and red.

No matter what you choose, the basic assembly is the same, and the result is perfect for any Disney fan!

How to Make Them:

(Printable step-by-step instructions are available below)

Make cake pop filling. First, you’ll need to mix together the crumbled cake and frosting, until it’s uniformly moist.

crumbled cake and frosting mixed together in a large mixing bowl

Form this mixture into 1 1/2″ balls (you should have roughly 15 cake balls). Set aside on a cookie sheet or piece of parchment paper or waxed paper.

Make red candy coating. Melt white almond bark in a bowl in the microwave, starting with a 30 second increment. Stir, then reheat in 15 second increments (stirring after each) until it’s smooth. Add enough red food coloring to tint the almond bark deep red.

Begin assembly. Dip a cake pop stick about 1/2″ into the red almond bark, then insert the stick into a prepared cake ball. Repeat with remaining sticks and cake balls.

Dip red. Dip each cake ball into the red almond bark until fully coated.

After coating each, place two circular candy melts into the top of the cake ball to form Mickey’s ears (before the red almond bark hardens!).

Set it upright in a foam block or holder and allow coating to harden.

Dip chocolate. Melt the chocolate almond bark in a bowl in the refrigerator, starting with a 30 second increment followed by 15 second increments, stirring after each until it’s nice and smooth.

Dip the hardened cake pops halfway into the melted chocolate, coating the ears and half of the cake pop with chocolate while leaving some red exposed on the bottom.

Let excess chocolate drip off and allow the Mickey Mouse heads to harden.

Add buttons. Melt half of a block of white almond bark in a microwave safe bowl, then add a drop or two of yellow food coloring.

Dip an unused cake pop stick into the yellow coating and add dots between the red and brown chocolate to form buttons.

Allow to harden completely before wrapping or serving.

Notes and Adaptations:

  • Feel free to use the cake flavor of your choice. Pick one up from your local grocery store or simply prepare a cake mix according to the package directions.
  • This recipe hasn’t been tested using cake pop molds–the texture of those cake balls is less dense, so I don’t know if Mickey’s ear would stay in sides of the cake pops as well.
  • There is a Mickey Mouse cake pop maker machine, which could be useful if you want to avoid candy melt ears. In that case, you’ll actually bake the cake batter in the cake pop maker, then dip in the melted almond bark.
